Tord Boontje

About the Artist

Tord Boontje was born in Enschede, Netherlands in 1968. He first studied industrial design at the design academy of Eindhoven and later got his masters from the Royal College of Art in London. He founded Studio Tord Boontje in 1996, in London. He believes that design should evoke emotion, be romantic, but also be as easily accessible as it is enticing. He has created exquisite glassware, lighting and furniture. His studio’s work draws from the belief, that "modernism does not mean minimalism, contemporary does not forsake tradition, and technology does not abandon people and senses.” The studio works borrow inspiration from nature and entice the observer’s imagination and emotions. They also believe in using the latest production and material technologies. The studio has worked with many important manufactures to produce a variety of products.

Come Rain Come Shine is produced through Coopa-Roca, a womens cooperative based in Rio de Janeiros largest shantytown, employing humanitarian values and artisanal production methods consistent with Artecnicas Design With Conscience campaign. By using their homes as workshops, cooperative members earn a living while tending to their children and other domestic responsibilities. In addition to extending livelihood opportunities, Coopa-Rocas commitment to world-class craftwork has enhanced the self-esteem of women in this impoverished neighborhood.
