Iittala

About the Company
Iittala creates objects that are thought through in form, function and quality. Objects with a clear thought, created to achieve long lasting everyday use and inspiration. Whether in metal, wood, porcelain or glass, Iittala design objects are tools for contemporary living Iittala continues to be a major driving force of Scandinavian design with legendary designers Kaj Franck (1911-1989) and Alvar Aalto (1898-1976) as the cornerstones for the brand. Iittala objects are design essentials stripped to their core; the pure union of function, form and quality that demonstrates our core philosophy of lasting everyday design against throwawayism.

multi-color aalto vase
Legendary shape. Alvar Aalto created the Aalto vase in various shapes, sizes and colors for Iittala and the World Fair in Paris in 1937. Supposedly, it is based on sketches made with the intriguing pseudonym “The Eskimo Woman’s Leather Breeches”, but Alvar Aalto was the son of a cartographer – perhaps the shapes are derived from the Finnish landscape and lakes. As is typical with a great work of art, the shape has been reinterpreted ever since. Alvar Aalto would never demonstrate how his glass objects should be used, but wanted the user to decide. This freedom to interpret the origins and function may be what has helped keep the Aalto collection so contemporary and fresh. Pieces can be displayed as a group or as a single, exclusive work of art, a pleasure to own or to give as a present. The Aalto vase has become one of the world’s most famous glass objects, deservedly synonymous with Finnish glass art and with Iittala. It is exhibited in some of the world’s most important design museums.

koskinen lantern, small
The Lantern candleholder by young Finnish designer Harri Koskinen is a light sculpture designed with clear and clean lines. The reflection of the candle inside the mouth-blown glass creates a warm atmosphere – it seems as though the light is hovering inside. The designer himself describes the Lantern candleholder as “light placed upon a pedestal.” The lantern itself is one glass piece with a smaller piece that drops in to hold the candle. A snuffer is included to aid in the lighting and extinguishing of the candle.
